Welcome to 2026 - let’s skip the fluff and get into it properly.<h3>What’s actually happening on social right now</h3>If social media already feels heavier than it should this year, quick reassurance… it’s not because you’re bad at it.And it’s definitely not because you’ve missed some secret update everyone else magically knows about.Across platforms, we’re seeing a really clear shift.<ul><li>Authentic content is winning Real, imperfect, genuinely useful posts are outperforming overly polished ones. People want connection, not performance.</li><li>People are still on social Usage hasn’t dropped. Attention has just become more selective. If content adds nothing, it gets scrolled past.</li><li>Short-form video still leads Video works, but only when it feels human. Forced trends and over-produced clips? Not so much.</li><li>Algorithms keep changing LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok all reward different behaviour. One-size-fits-all just doesn’t cut it anymore.</li></ul>In other words… effort isn’t the problem. Well, Meta just had a massive court win that's got everyone talking.A federal judge ruled that Meta didn't violate copyright law when training their AI models on original works - including books by comedian Sarah Silverman and other authors. The judge's reasoning? Meta's use was "transformative”, and they weren't trying to create competing works.The judge essentially said that on a case-by-case basis, where someone can prove their work has been directly copied and they've been harmed financially, they'll probably win. But this broad-scale lawsuit didn't have enough evidence of actual market damage.What does this mean for everyone else?&nbsp;AI companies can probably keep using publicly available content for training, but individual creators might still have a shot at protection if they can prove direct copying and harm. It's messy, but that's what happens when new technology meets old copyright laws.<h3>💎 Instagram and Spotify team up</h3>You can now listen to music previews when someone shares a Spotify track in their Stories, instead of just getting a boring link.This might not sound revolutionary, but it's another step in Instagram's mission to become the TikTok replacement if the whole US ban thing happens. Music discovery and sharing is huge on TikTok, so Instagram's making sure they're ready to swoop in.You've been able to add music to Stories forever, but now the Spotify integration works properly. Small wins, people.<h3>💎&nbsp;TikTok's getting into the group chat game</h3>TikTok's testing something called "Bulletin Boards", basically their version of Instagram's Broadcast Channels. Creators and brands can now share updates, photos, and videos with their followers in a one-way messaging format.Think of it as a VIP newsletter that lives in your DMs. Followers can react but can't reply back, which is probably a blessing for anyone who's ever had to manage a chaotic group chat.Some big names like Paris Saint-Germain and the Jonas Brothers already have hundreds of thousands of followers on their boards. It's another way for brands to share exclusive content and keep their audience engaged beyond just posting videos.💎 Elon Musk declares war on hashtagsIn what can only be described as peak Elon behaviour, X has banned hashtags from all promoted posts because Musk thinks they're an "aesthetic nightmare."Now, Twitter's old ad team had been telling advertisers to ditch hashtags for years because they can distract from the actual call-to-action. But completely banning them? That's pure Elon.The logic makes some sense, if you want someone to click your link or follow your account, you don't want them wandering off to explore a hashtag instead. You know when someone just seems more content with everything? That's Twinnie right now.Her new favourite hobby? Strategic napping. She booked and paid for one. It’s been a long and wild year at SocialJems, and though Jem always adapts…she’s still human.
