Selling Without Selling

Selling Without Selling
How to Use Humour (and a Bit of Humility) to Stand Out on LinkedIn
Let’s be honest.
No one logs on to LinkedIn thinking:
“Can’t wait to read 46 posts today that scream
BUY MY THING
NEW SERVICE
HERE’S MY OFFER!”
And yet… so many people still post like that.
Here’s the thing…
Your audience isn’t allergic to buying.
They’re allergic to boring.
So if you want people to stop scrolling, start laughing, and actually remember what you do?
You need to sell without selling.
You need to bring the banter.
Sprinkle in a little storytelling.
And top it off with a good ol’ dose of humility.
Because when you do that?
People don’t just like your content.
They start to like you.
So… How Do You Actually Sell Without Selling?
1. Be Human First
Before you’re a business owner, marketer or sales machine, you’re a human.
And humans connect through the messy, the mundane and the downright ridiculous.
Talk about the client who ghosted you for 6 months and then suddenly came back needing everything yesterday.
Share the behind-the-scenes chaos of trying to record a video while your dog’s chewing a flip-flop and your kid’s shouting about snacks.
Because when people relate to you?
They remember you.
And when they remember you?
You don’t have to scream “BUY MY SHIZ”.
They’ll come knocking when they’re ready.
2. Use Humour Like a Hook
Humour doesn’t just entertain. It connects.
It drops people’s defenses. It makes them feel something.
And it makes you stand out in a feed full of cookie-cutter “thought leadership”.
So instead of saying:
“We offer social media training for small businesses.”
Try:
“We teach small business owners how to stop posting like it’s 2012.”
Or:
“Our course helps you post with confidence — no more relying on your 14-year-old niece for Reels ideas.”
Same message. WAY more scroll-stopping.
3. Make Your Audience the Main Character
Humour isn’t just about being funny.
It’s about being relatable.
So instead of writing posts that go:
“Look at what WE did!”
“Our client got this result!”
Try flipping it:
“Ever spent 3 hours on a post that got 2 likes (and one was your mum)? Yeah, same.”
“Remember when you thought hashtags were dead but your post went viral because of #awkwardwin? That.”
Make your audience feel seen.
Because when they see themselves in your content, they’ll see you as the person who gets them.
4. Stay in Your Lane, But Have Fun With It
Yes, you can be funny AND credible.
Your expertise doesn’t disappear just because you dropped a GIF or told a story about your kid shooting Nerf guns at your head.
(Trust us. We’ve built a business off the back of that exact chaos.)
You can show up as the expert and the real-life human behind the business.
That’s the sweet spot.
What Happens When You Nail This?
You stop chasing leads.
They start coming to you.
People feel like they know you, because they do.
You’ve been showing up consistently, being useful, being honest, and being you.
You’ve been selling… without selling.
Remember…
If your content feels dry, stiff or just plain “meh”, loosen it up.
Let people in.
Show them who you are.
Make them laugh. Make them feel. Make them think.
Because the magic isn’t in perfect content.
It’s in real content.
With a wink, a wobble, and a whole lot of you.
